Origins of Refuge Loriaz - Vallorcine

History

This alpine community dating from the 15th century, had the originality of being divided into fifteen or so « stables » built one against another, facing the « chavanne » (cheese dairy).

This typical architecture, is linked to the history of the Walser people who had left their traces on their way through Haute-Savoie and in particular the origins of Vallorcine..., and the pasture.

In 1976 this "chavanne" was transformed into a refuge but the rural way of life was not abandoned.

A herd of fine Herens cows climbs at the time when the rhododendrons flower.

The gentians and the anemones leave the pastures to violets, St-Bruno lilies and vanilla orchids.

High up, at the refuge  Loriaz, take time for a break, a drink, have something to eat or decide to stay the night.

Marvel at the sunset lighting up the Mont-Blanc, or climb up in the coll of the day to a lovely spot for breakfast in the sun.
